Dr. J. C. Macgowan's „victory on Sun- burst Rose was a very popular one as the public have a antaking regard for the small owner. -

The Pari-mutuel and the Cash Sweops were slightly below normal but typhoon signals, with the danger of a downpour and counter attractions, were no doubt responsible for this.

Favours were "more evenly distributed than usual amongst Owners and Jockeys and the public were also given a chance to pick up a few decent dividends

Despite an alleged shortage of ponies and the difficulties of getting new ones from the North the Jockey Club Officials “have shown that they can give the public

· SALE OF WORK AT ST. STEPHEN'S,

GIRLS' COLLEGE.

k

OPENED BY MRS. „W. T. SOUTHORN.

In aid of the Chinese poor schools and hospitals, and also the funds of Minister- ing Children's League, a sale of work was held at the St. Stephen's Girls' College on Saturday. It is expected that a large sum was raised as result of the effort, for last year over $1,000 was raised by St. Stephen's Girls in aid of charitable works,

At the opening ceremony, in the morning, the good work of the school in assisting, hospitals and schools less favourably situated than itself was em- phasised by those taking part in the opening. The value of the school as means of strengthening the bonds between Chinese and British was also emphasised.

The opening ceremony, which took place in the Hall of the College, was pre- sided over by Mr. W. W. Hornell, C.L.E.. supported by the following members of the School Council: the Right Rev. Bishop C R Duppuy and Mrs. Duppuy,.. Mrs. W. 7. Southern, Mrs. H. T...... Creasy, the Rev. H. Copley Moyle, Mrs Forstor, the Rev. Lai Kau Yan, Mrs. W. K. Cheung. Miss Middle- ton. Mr. Hornell emphasised that the sale was not organised for the benefit of the College itself but for that of less for- tunate girls and poor institutions, and also referred to the part that St. Stephen's was playing in strengthening. the relations between the Chinese and these not Chinese. There was still a cer- tain amount of feeling existing in re gard to this latter particular but "nore at St. Stephen's and none, he hoped, at the University,
