Soon after the start, it was obvious that the race lay between May and Lyon. The former swam very well throughout using a stronger right over arm stroke in his double-stroke style and indeed ap- peared the best swimmer, of the four. He led niter covering two lengths and kept his lead until the twelsth length when he had a clear, lead of two yards. over Lyon, who was second all the time. Cooke took time to find his true form, and at the end of the eighth length was third, swimming strongly.. Bridie, found the pace very "bot" and retired at the end of the tenth length.

It was apparent, however, that Lyon's strong af at the ends of the bath helped him considerably and, perhaps, with this knowledge he did not extend himself in straight swimming preferring to concede a slight lead to May every length -and- then regaining it at the push of He as serted himself at the thirteenth length when he was behind May by two yards and drew level at the fourteenth, secur ing the lead for the first time at the end of the sixteenth by two yards, and finishing strongly at the next and fins! stretch about 2 yards in front of May amidst applause. Cooke was about three quarters of a length behind and was ́ap- preciably applauded when he finished
