A telegram from Allahabad announces the death of Sir John Alexander Buck- nill, Judge of the Patna High Court, who was formerly Attorney-General of Hong- kong
A Distinguished. Üsreer. The late Sir John Bucknil, K.O., had a varied and distinguished career." He was born at Clifton in 1873, and was educated | primarily at Charterhouse, where in 1891 he secured an exhibition in science. On leaving Charterhouse he went to Keble, College, Oxford, and took his B. A. in 1894, securing konours in chemistry. Two years later he became a barrister-at-law. of the Inner Temple and joined the Mid- land Circuit in 1886.
A year later he took the Master of Arts! degree, Oxford, and in 1902 went to the Transvaal where he practiced as an ad- vocate of the Supreme Court. The same year he became a Justice of the Peace, and two years later was appointed a member of the Legislative Council. Among other offices which he held was that of Member of the prisons Advisory Board, 1905, lega! advisor to the Attorney-General 1900, and Chairman of Committees of the Legisla
·tive Council'in the same year, From 1902 to 1907 be was also Commissioner far Patents and Registrar for Trade Marks and Companies for the Transvaal.
