PLEASANT FUNCTION AT R.N. THEATRE.
A convivial time was spent at the Royal Naval Theatre on Saturday even- ing by fully 100 members of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes, tha ogession being a farewell dinner of Eg Gloria Lodge, No. 5879.
The membership of the E. Gloria Lodge consists for the most part of mem- bers of the 25th Heavy Battery, R., stationed at Stonecutters Island, where, incidentally, the Lodge was originally founded, the founders being Primos Steel, Holmes, Ward and Manwaring, who were all present at the dinner. The

The function was conducted on in- formal lines and everyone spent thoroughly enjoyable time. The Theatre and the tables were very tastefully de- carated, thanks to the efforts of Mr. Stark (Canteen Manager) and Mrs. Stark, who were warmly thanked for their work during the evening.
The Toast List. The Toast Master was Bro. Hopkins, and the toasts were submitted between the serving of each course on the menu. The
all submitted with toasts were brevity, and what little was said was to the point. A happy feature of the whole function was the entire absence of speeches.
The following toasts were submitted dering the evening: The King," by the Chairman Primo Steel; "The Order, by Primo Holmes; Absens Members, Ly Primo Ward; Guests," by Primo Meanwaring; Founders of Et Gloria Lodge. by Primo Hoare: "Our Depart- ing Guests." by Trimo Gibb, in the absence of Primo Jeffreys, P.G.P., who was unavoidably absent from the dinner owing to sickness.” -

DEMAND FOR A PETROL TAX. | compete against their American rivals on
PROBLEM FOR MOTOR-CAR
DESIGNERS.
OWNERS IN FAVOUR
Will the petrol tax return 1
This is the question to which all! British motor-car manufacturers are busy guessing the answer at present, says a Home paper.
Horse-power, of course, is the basis of motor-car taxation now; but all moto rists are" convinced that this is an unjust basis, and, headed by the Automobile Association and the Royal Automobile Club, a vigorous agitation is being or ganised throughout the country in favour of a return to the petrol tax.
IL this agitation is successful it will alter the whole trend of motor-car engine design in Britain. A
a much more" equal basis. The petrol consumption of these larger American engines is not much greater than that of British super-efficient engines of much lower horse-power, while the ac commodation and luxury afforded by the larger American vehicle" are naturally more attractive.
British manufacturers, therefore, are faced with the possibility of having to change, their policy, in order to produce: motor-cars with larger-but less tremen dously efficient engines, which would compete with American productions in their own class.
Such a change in policy would entail. a large capital expenditure in scrapping existing plant and laying down new machinery and in research work.
