“MONTEAGLE.”.

WELL-KNOWN TRANS-PACIFIC VESSEL PASSES TO HANDS

OF SHIPBREAKERS.

So many ships which are presumably sul to shipbreakers find their way into active service again that it is not until elosing entries are actually made against' their names Llugil's Register that it is anfe tu presume the end of a steamer these days However, such entries have been made to the Canadian Pacião, str. Monteagle which

laid up off Southend for some months balone her sale in the Spring of this year.../

An Old Type.

She was one of the old-type four-masted | steamers and was built in 1983 with a gross tonnage of 6,870 and a speed of 13 knots. She was specially designed for the North Atlantic cattle and general cargo trade and from the first showed herself to he a very successful vessel. After she had been only a short time on service, however, she was taken up by the Army as a horse transport to South Afrien, becoming Transport No. 97, but was soon back on her Canadian rente, In July, 1002, she ran ashore on Fane Point and was only refloated after a good deal of difficulty.

At this time the Canadian Pacifci Railway were establishing themselves on the North Atlantic and in the Spring of 1003 they took over the entire Elder Dempster feet, thus introducing the letter 1. into their system of nomenclature, to which they have adhered ever siace. Three years later the Monteagle took a single sailing to Hongkong, being un- fortunately blown ashore, during a typhoon and sustaining considerate damagy

When war broke out she was running on the service between Hougtong and). Vancouver but was taken up in the early. daya as a transport for the Indian Ex- peditionary Force. Later she was put on various war services. including the car. riage of Serbian troops to Suez and a Voyage from Siberia with-home-coming troops. In 1919 she had a Ere on board while at Hongkong, while two years later alic again appeared in the news"through having rendered very gallant service to the crew of the wrecked French vessel Hain Tien. In 1993, her name was pro- visionally altered to Belton bus she has never taken a sailing under that name.- N. Baily News.
