PROMENADE CONCERT.
ENJOYABLE ENTERTAINMENT AT H.V.D.C. HEADQUARTERS.
INFANTRY COMPANY'S SUCCESS- FUL FUNCTION.
The promenade concert-the first effort qf its kind.organised by the lafantry Company of the Hongkong Volunteer Defence Corps-held at Volunteer Head- quarters parade ground last night, prov- ed a most successful function, as well as being a very enjoyable entertainment.
The parade ground was tastefully illuminated and the seating accom- modation was arranged to suit the re- quirements of parties attending. There was an excellent attendance and the pro- gramme, which was of high order, and also well yaried, was thoroughly appre ciated, while, on more than oat occasion, encores were demanded.
The object of the concert was to raise funds for the newly formed Rifle Club of the Infantry Company, and also to stimalate interest in the Company.

The entertainment was indeed a musical treat for all who attended. The pro- gramme opened with an overture Pique Dance" (Suppe) by the Ubique Orchestra, which was followed by a song, "Dear Heart" (Matte) by Mrs. F. White. Mr. O. Eigar introduced a lighter vein with bis humorous song, "We Always Sing the First Verse Firat," for which he was recalled; while Mr. F. White was heard to much advantage in The Deathless Army" (Trottere) Miss Vera Jefford was responsible for a graceful and charming- ly executed toe" dance Sylvia," and Mrs. W. R. Fleming and Mr. R. M. Keown were well received in their duet, "Serenade" (Schubert). A song, "My Ships (Barratt) contributed by Mrs. G. Watt, and a selection, "Iolanthe " (Sullivan) by the Ubique Orchestra, con- cluded the first part of the programme. After the interval, the Ubique Orchestra opened the second part of the entertain- ment, with the selection "Rose Marie (Frime and Stothart), and Mrs. F. Lawrence sang "Myfanwy ". (Foster). A very pleasing number was the humour- ous monologue, The Playwright" by Mr. Stuart Bedells. and Mrs. Fleming. was again heard to splendid effect in a solo "Dancing Day (Dickson) Mr.. J. H. Shaw contributed a clarionet solo Alicante" (Thiere) and Mr. R. M. Keown was again well received, his second contribution being "The Song of the Toreador" (Bizet). Miss Vera Jefford gave a very attractive classical dance" Rustle of Spring" (Bind) and a capital enterainment was concluded with the playing of the popular Spanish one-step Valencia (Padilla) by the I Ubique Orchestra
