Wu Pei Fu's withdrawal yesterday blocked the return of a special train from Chikubgsian carrying 190 local residents who are now stranded 22 miles away.
The defence of the Settlements is well organized by Volunteers and the naval landing parties.
The American ships in port are:- U.S.S. Stewart and Pope, destroyers, U.S.S. Pigeon, flagship, and the gunboats cruiser, H. M.S. Despatch; and the mani- Bleano and Palus. The British are
