DIOCESE OF VICTORIA: SYNOD OF THE CHINESE

CHURCH.

RISHOP'S REVIEW OF THE WORK DONE.

Religious Education.

The fifth meeting of the Victoria everywhere are contagious personalities, Diocesan Synod of the Chung Hwa Sheng people whose lives are really devoted to Kung Hui was opened yesterday at St. Jesus Christ and dominated by His Joba's Cathedral Hall, the Hight Rev, spirit. the Bishop of Victoria being in the chair. Considering provailing conditions there was a good attendance of delegates from the mainland, in addition to the repre- | sentatives from the various churches in Hongkong.

A second question which I think should occupy us 13 **Are we getting the best re- sulta from our religious education"? The visit of Mr. T. 4. Koo, in the early part of this year, brought this question to At the opening meeting of the Synedr minds. Our Christian schools exist the Bishop of Victoria addressed the as primarily not so much to carry on a wide sembled delegates as follows

general education for Chinese society as to educate the children of the Christian community and those who desire to be come Christians, and to train leaders for the Christian movement. I think one of the points which we should consider is how our schools can be brought into closer relationship with the Chung Hwa Sheng Kung Hui. It was suggested at our last Synod that an Education. Com- mittee should be formed and I should like to see such, a "body founded as the pre- sent time.

We come together to-day for the fifth meeting of our Diocesan Synod. Our numbers are smaller than they usually are-on account of difficulties of travel but 1 am sure that it is good that we should meet at such a time as this to taka stock of our position. I am parti cularly glad that we have with us today a delegate from the Mandarin speaking part of the Diocese, because I am sure that in this part of Chins we may look by God's blessing for considerable deve, lopments in the near future. We must work for the time when the Mandarin speaking provinces of Yunnan and Kwei- chow will form a separate diocese.
