CANTON DAY BY DAY.
SITUATION UNCHANGED.
NO PICKETS ON THE RIVER BUT STILL ACTIVE
IN CITY.
THE 'S.S.
"FOOSHING'S" TRIP.
The reports from Canton yesterday simply stated that there was no change in the situation. Everything is quiet. The pickets are to be seen in the City-some of them at any rate wearing their uniform -as-usual-but there are acne on the river, nad, of course, the nightly. shooting at passengers attempting to board the British steamers has been stopped.
The Lungahan had a very good cargo on her last trip, On the outward Yun she saw the forts at Bocca Tigris engaged in practic Bring. The gung were pitching shells right into the fairway and although. there was a boat flying a red flag as a warning to shipping the ex- perience was not a particularly pleasant one.
According to the Canton Information Bureau the four Chambers of Commerce in Canton have jointly issued a telegram denouncing the The Union of forcible landing of British naval forces at Canton. Peasants, Workers, Merchants and Students have issued a notification asking their brethren to remain calm and to avoid being inveigled into the cunning trap of the British Imperialists." The full text of the communiqué is given below,
On the other hand the Canton Gazette contains a proclamation from Chiang Kai Shek pointing out that to overthrow Imperialism is not to misuse foreigners". "We ought," he says, " to avow explicitly that we shall protect the life and property of any foreigner who does not hinder our revolutionary movements." "
The Fogsking, one of Jardine's boats. left for Canton yesterday morning. She took up a good deal of cargo and Hongkong Chinese merchants are already making enquiries when the next boat will go, as they are anxious to recommence shipping direct to the Southern Capital. The Foushing's trip is the first of its kind arranged by a British ship- ping company since the commencement of the strike-with the exception, of course, of the Hongkong. Canton and Macao Steamboat Co. Foothing will tie up at the Company's wharf in the usual way.and will be ready to accept any cargo that may be offering. Mr. R. S Sutherland, of the Indo-China S.X. Co., has been in Canton for the past two days in connection with this experiment.
The
Rumours are current in Canton that Nanning has been captured by anti-Reds but there is no confirmation of the report.
The first reports that "the pots and pans" belonging to the strike pickets were thrown into the river when the Bluejackets cleared them from the Steamboat Company's wharf are stated to be incorrect Tho pickets removed all their belongings and were not molested whilst deing 80. Subsequently they swept the wharf and left it quite clean and tidy. We are glad to be able to make this statement for we believe in. the policy of giving the devil his due."
