SPECULATION IN SHARES. SHARP RISES AND FALLS.

Millions of people in the British Isles are watching with keen interest the de- velopment of competition between the great cigarette-producing firms of this country, writes the Daily Mail of July

20th.

*

There is so far no sign of price cutting, nor has there been any attempt on the part of the powerful concerns like the Imperial Tobacco Co. to buy out inde pendent competitors such as Carreras, Ltd., R. and J. Hill, Ltd., and Godfrey Phillips, Ltd. On the other hand, re- presentatives of both sides have acquired interest in or control over lesser firms, and have produced a cheaper form of the brands of cigarettes made by those firms, but nothing has yet been put on the mar ket below the standard přies of sixpence for ten.

Thus the capitals of the "indepen- dent companies are almost insigniacant in comparison with those of the giant companies of the "combine.'

A CAUSE OF THE FALL. The reports as to intensive competition among the companies have been a con- tributory factor of the recent sharp set- back in the Stock Exchange prices of the leading tobacco shares.

رهم

They have not, however, been the sole cause of the fail. The reduction in the interim dividend on Courtaulda, the great artificial silk company, whose shares had been the medium of active speculation, was the signal for a general withdrawal by speculators from some of the leading industrial share counters.

Rightly or wrongly, this cut in an im- portant industrial dividend was regard- ed partly as a possible indication of the effects of competition and partly as a forcible reminder that the general strike and the coal stoppage were upsetting trade generally in such a fashion as to justify more caution than speculators had been exercising,

In other words, there has been an excess of speculation. This speculation bad centred largely on tobacco shares and, as generally happens after a big speculative rise, the awakening to ua- pleasant facts was followed by an equally big fall.

Tobacco shares, too, apart from the competition, had their own cause for anxiety in the absence of a bonus to thareholders of the Imperial Tobacco Company, which was expected to follow the recent example of its associate the British-American Tobacco "Company in giving a "plum" to its shareholders.

Probably the recent set-back in Stock Exchange quotations has been assisted by a certain amount of "bear selling. that is, selling by speculators in the hope of being able to secure profits by re-pur- chasing the shares at lower prices.

(The ex-Kaiser is claiming large areas Nothing stood still, and nothing should a personal estate.] stand still, and least, the progress of science and of industry. It was a moving, living thing, and if people would only remember that the industry was not static, but dynamic, a great many mis Conceptions, financial and economic, would be. wiped off the discussions and controversies of the world. In the félð of politics and the field of economies he was continually coming up against the false ideas that industry was static, that wages were static, and that anything in the living organism was static, instead of beißig dynamic. To-day the production of synthetic ammonia. from the air for the creation of nitrogenous fertilisers had become one of the greatest industries "of the world, to the limits of which they could not at present set any future. It was amazing to him that people talked almost as if the country, had finished its career. There was as yet an almost -un- touched field of science. We were not · at the end, but at the beginning of a scientific era, .Science was the real wealth-giver of the world. The society stood not merely for academic science, but for the welding of scientific research to practical industry, Without science", there would be no interest; no stimulus. and no future., It was an industry which had managed its affairs in the part and would in the future challenge comparison: with any other, industry in the country.
