Another crime of violence, says the NC. Daily News, was perpetrated by
Mr. W. J. Womersley, M. P., who raised the matter writes to the paper:
Our oldest and best-managed friendly societies show in their returns that man- the radical labour element on "Wednes-agement expenses run from da, to da. ed. day when a gang of five or six Chinese per member. broke into the house of a sub-foremna in
Yangtszepoo and attacked him and his wife with axes. Both are in a critical coadition.
At 8.45 a.m., the foreman, who is em- played at the Ewo Mili. whose hands are locked out, together with his wife, who is also a farewoman in the same mill, were rudely roused by the gang who smashed their way inside. Without a word of warning the marauders began. their onslaught on their victims, who could not offer an adequate resistance. Having seriously wounded the pair, the tang. possibly afraid of interference from the outside, made off, being uniden- tised.

"The answer to the question as to why trade union should cost so much more to run than a friendly society is, to a certain extent, answered by further refer- ence to the returns made to the Registrar of Friendly Socfeties, which show the large amounts some unions spend or the political side.
"Take one example. During the year 1929, when there was a general election, one union paid to its president:

Allowance for travelling ox-

To its general secretary:

Farm Hands' Funds.
Sir Arthur Steel Maitland, Minister of Labour, replying to Major Ruggles-Brise (Con, Maldon) in Parliament, said that on December 31st, 1923, the total receipts of the National Union of Agricultural Counter propaganda, work is being Workers were £15,066, the working ex.. | carried on quietly to overcome the at-penses were 13,832, including £8,485 for titude of the radicals, and the manage- salaries and allowances and so forth and for branch secretaries, while the benefit ments hope to avert a general movement paid to members other than in dispute though with what success, however, is pay was £1,992. ing expenses represented 91.83 per cent. of the total income (Laughter.)
The miners' anions were affiliated for political purposes to the Miners' Federa tion of Great Britain, and rendered no statutory returns of their political in- come, expenditure, or funds. The liners Federation was not registered and was under no statutory obligation to furnish any returns.
Their achievement in bringing about the additional strikes in the Nalgai Wata Kaisha organization has encouraged the leader among the workmen and they are fereing the issue, if possible. Although they urge peaceful means officially, that is, in their pamphlets and other pub- "lications the two "kawarranted assaults en, mill men of importance belie the motives behind their propaganda state- ments. Secret picketing parties and post-
ng make work for the police a burden.
Funds from Eussia.
According to the Shanghai Journal of Commerce the General Committee have agreed to use the surplus funds from the general strike of 1925 to support the: labourers. How much of this money re mains is a question, when one considers the immense amounts, which went to lize the pockets of Li Lib Saa and others of that ilk. Students of the situation con- sider this announcement as a blind to hide funds which might come from Rus- sian sources.
•
The General Labour Union has organiz-' ed the various units on strike into a cohesive working organization, each hav ing its own general strike committee, with sub-committees dealing with pro- paganda, funds, supplies, picketing and posting. The general supervisory com mittee now numbers 650, it is reported.
Street Unions Alarmed.
The only redeeming feature. of the situation, says the paper, seems to lie in a meeting of the Federation of Street Uniona which resolved to send a party of delegates to mediate in the strike at the Naigai Wata Kaisha and the Chung Hua Book Co. Observers believe, in view of the determined attitude of the Shanghai General Labour Union, that whatever they do or say will be of no avail.
The Chinese silk filatures, which sus pended operations on the afternoons dur ing the hot weather, resumed their. work again on Tuesday.
