The East Indian was constructed as a twin screw steamer at a Japanese ship, yard in 1915, then burning coal, and equipped with Scotch boilers and having triple expansion engines of 4,200 Lh.p. When acquired by the Ford Motor Co. in 1925 the ship was not then in opera- tion. Conversion to an oil fuel burning vessel was easily accomplished, and in such a way that the main Diesel engines and auxiliary equipment was fitted into the original machinery space.
