BEST FOR SOMETIME.

The prediction given in yesterday's issue that there would be an increase in tonnage and freight for the next return, was fully justified by the figures recorded in yesterday's shipping state- ment. There was an all round increase, and the cargo both for this port and mark than for some time past. The in- dications for to-day, however, are that freight will show another reduction' and will be fairly low, for there were only four arrivals later than 9 a.m. when the Harbour Once closed yesterday after- noon. Tonnage showed an increase of over 42,000 tons, compared with the figures of the previous day, the total tonnage entered reading:-Total: 48,107 tons (British vessels: 15,111 tens; other nationalities: 33,298 tons). Hongkong cargo showed an increase of over 10,000 tons, and freight for ather ports had gone up by over 9,000 tons.

SHIPPING NOTES.

General Metzinger, The French 5.5. which was scheduled to arrive in port yesterday morning did not arrive until late afternoon, having, been delayed by the typhoon which she encountered on her way to Hongkong, and from which she took shelter at Woosung.....

The City of Wellington's report made to the Harbour Office yesterday: stated that she encountered a typhoon on August 13th and 14th when in Latitude 14.00 N Longitude 123 E. The Tjika- room also mentioned m:eting with a typhoon from the Straits to Hongkong. but no details were given. The report from the ... West Halvard (American). which arrived here from Astoria and Kobe yesterday afternoon, stated that bad weather bad been encountered.

The 5.3. President McKinley had only two cabin passengers when she arrived in port yesterday morning from Manila.

Shanghai having been declared an in- fected port, all passengers travelling either third-class or steerage by the Canadian Pacific, Dollar Line and Ad- mirai-Oriental Line, going--beyond. Shanghai, will not be allowed, to go ashore in Shanghai, this being a precau tion against the Cholera epidemic pre- vailing in that port

The total number of deck passengers entered for the 24-hours-ended at 9-a.r yesterday was 368, of which the 8. Hydrangea (British) from Kwang Chow Wan carried 300, and the 8.3. Van Over. atralen (Dutch) from Amoy 328.

The river, steamers from Canton con- tinue to bring increased consignments of ginger from that port. Shipments are increasing much in value to that prevail- ing up to recent dates

A notice from the Customs authorities at Foochow states that the port of Ningpo has been declared cholera in fected, and, therefore, all vessels arriving from that port on and after August 11th, will be governed by the sanitary regula tions for the port of Foochow. A simi- lar notice applies to the epidemic at Amby,
