ORDER FOR FREIGHTERS PLACED
_WITH_BRITISH YARDS.
Prior to leaving England for Canada by the R.M.S. Empreis of France, Mr. E-W. Bentty, President of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company (as "already stated briefly in the Daily Press), an- nounced that he, had placed contracts with British yards for three of the five freighters which are to assist in main- taining the company's London-Montreal
gervice.
The vessels, which will each be of 10,000 tons, will he built by
Mesura Barclay, Curle & Co., Ltd.. of the Clyde:
Messrs. William Denny and Bros.. Lid, of Dumbarton, and
Messrs. Armstrong, Whitworth & Co., Ltd., of Wallsend-on-Tyne.
They are to be completed in a year. The two new passenger vessels, which, as already announced, are to be built by Mears, John Brown & Co. Ltd., and Messrs. W. Beardmore & Co., Ltd., will not be ready for service until the spring of 1999.
The contracts for the remaining two freighters have been left in abeyance, but Mr. Beatty, said that this was no indication that they would not be placed in England
OBSOLETE TONNAGE. Speaking generally, Mr. Beatty said, "I think that both the shipbuilding, and the shipowning business has reached its lowest ebb, for while in relation to the former the industry must necessarily de- pend upon the needs of owners who are dependent upon the 'condition of trade, A great deal of the tonnage at present saling the ocean is becoming obsolete, and will have to replaced within the next few years. That alone will give, a much- required impetus to the shipping in- dustry."
With regard to the Canadian Pacific Railway Company's replacement, Mr. Beatty said that they would withdraw ships in rotation as they became unfit for the North Atlantic trade, and that would provide the possibility of further work in the future for British yarda

leave the mining situation behind there would be ample grounds for hoping that there would follow, a period of consider- able prosperity. The solution of the coal dispute was, in fact, essential to any advance in business, as it was
a key industry.

New Mathilde (British) from Haiphong with 340 tons of general cargo; City of Wellington (British) from Hamburg and Singapore with 500 tons of general cargo and 8,000 tons for porta beyond; President Hayes (American) from Boston and Shanghai with 1200 tons of general cargo, mail and 5,000 tona for ports beyond; Song Bo (French) from Haiphong with 114 tons of general cargo and mail.
