DIRECT LINE UNPROFITABLE.

Questioned regarding reports that the Dollar, line had plans for a direct steam- ship service between either San Francisco or Seattle, and Manila, calling only at Honolulu Captain Dollar replied that such an operation would be unprofitable and therefore impossible. He explained that there was not enough business in Manila and Honolulu to warrant it. The bulk of the shipping trade in the Orient comes from Japan and China, he said.

ள்

A month spent in China, which was devoted to thorough inspection of coastal and interior conditions, revealed to Captain Dollar that in spite of the re cent troubles in the republic, resulting from internecine warfare within the country, shipping business has increased. The increase is obvious in both passenger and freight transportation, he declared.
