Mr. E. V. Enox said Professor Low seemed to think there was no passage of time between the cave man and the man whose life was made up by means of modern invention. There had, in fact, been several interim periods. We had to look at the world which modern inver- tion had given us, and we found first of all that it was over-populated, and so filled with factories that people could hardly breathe. Science had gone from the philosopher's stone to synthetic pearls and the thyroid gland, and had brought about the world. in which we blindly groped to-day. In the Victorian period Tennyson welcomed the steamship and the railway, but he would have had some- thing very emphatic, to say about the ringing of the telephone bell. (Laugh, ter.)
