The fallow with the gun, who was on the other side of the bus yelled for him to stop but he was not having any of it, and kept right on going as faat as he could. This fellow took a pot shot at him as went by. Just as a bit of luck the driver was not killed. The bandit's aim was good enough. The bullet went into the right rear door, at an angle, but it hit the window lifter inside the door which deflected it along the door toward the front of the car. It inally lodged right at the edge of the back of the front. seat near the door catch.
This should be good news for people living in South China. It is, of course, easy to be over optimistic about any new invention. On the other hand experts have spoken favourably of this one. The patent rights have been sold recently in the USA and the price paid for the privilege of manufacturing the new type of refrigerator in that country was a big The distinguishing feature of the new invention is that it embodies no moving elements whatever. As supplied by the makers the plagt consists of three chambers, called the generator, the absorber and the evapo rator.
The evaporator becomes very cold. It is placed inside the "ice-box" or the chamber to be, cooled.
The generator is heated by electric current or gas, and with the absorber, is placed outside the ice-box.
A ROUNDABOUT PROCESS.
I was only about 25 yards bebind the driver and passed the bus just as the shot was fired. Tried to run over the bandit who did the shooting but was un- lucky. Only managed to knock him over the bank, but this saved him from taking a shot at me as by the time he had picked himself up I was up, the road in a cloud of dust. His shot did not come any place near me. We found out later, from a car that passed this bus after the bandits had left, that they had killed the bus driver.

VARIETY OF ENQUIRIES.
The total number of books and pam- phlets in the Library is 174,130, and it will be realised that the labour involved in cataloguing and keeping in touch with the vast range of subjects covered by these publications, which are continually begin added to, is very considerable.
But, in addition to the normal routine incident to a great library of this nature, there is the task of dealing with a large number of enquiries on a variety of sub-

This liquid ammonia (or any other suitable stuff, such as carbon-dioxide) is led to the evaporator. The pressure is allowed to drop and the liquid, at the low pressure, begins to evaporate or boil. That demands heat. It sucks the heat cut of the water to be frozen or the chamber to kept cold.
