B. & S. GODOWN GUTTED.
Those few pleasure seekers who hap- pened to be still abroad at 3:55 o'clock this morning (says the Shanghai Mer- cury of the 23rd inst.) were able to witness one of the most spectacular Gres which has been seen in the central dis- trict for a long time, when godawa No 5 of Messrs. Butterfield and Swire, Ltd, containing upwards of 20,000 half chests of green and black tea, the property of various owners, caught fire and was completely destroyed.
*
The godown, though situated in the French Concession, at the rear of the French Consulate, the Hotel Plaza, the Intersavin Building and almost next door to the shipping offices of the Messageries Maritimes, created a blażę sufficient to attract the International Settlement Fire Brigade and nearly a dozen engines turned out to the scene and stood by, in case of need.
For the most part, however, the French Fire Brigade was able to handle the situation and it refects great credit upon the work of the fire fighters that the fire was prevented from spreading to the adjoining buildings.
Chinese residents of a number of alley ways in the block were ordered to vacate their premises and did so with alacrity. The fire lasted throughout the remainder of the dark hours and this afternoon was still smouldering while firemen re- mained on duty with several long lines of bose continuing to play upon the. Ere. The godown was completely gutted and the entire contents destroyed. There ras in addition to the tes a quantity of paper which was also destroyed. It is not known whether the ten or the paper was insured, as it was the property of a number of consignees.

RETIREMENT OF SHANGHAI'S

Tennis lovers in Shanghai will greatly regret to hear the news that Mrs. C. D. Pearson has decided to retire from com- petitive tennia
For many years she has been the out- standing figure among the ladies on the tennie-court and her beautifully nest style of play" and "appearance and her unassuming manner have always made her a delight to watch and a popular idol with the tennis public..
In 1920 and the two following years she won the Ladies Singles Champion. abip, and again in 1924. At her best she was in a class by herself locally, and had she cared to select her own partner in the Ladies Doubles and Mixed Doubles abe would undoubtedly have added many more of these trophies to her collection. But Mrs Pearson has been nothing if she had not been a thorough sportsman" "it every sense of the word, and invariably played with the first partner who asked her to play with her. In spite of this fact she has three times won the Mixed Doubles, and twice the Ladies Doubles, and to see her playing against the best men players was a joy to watch.
