The Zurich court awarded £4,210 damages to a wealthy tradesman for in-↓ juries received: during radium treatment.
A doctor whom he consulted declared" that he was suffering from cancer of the tongue, and sent him to a radium- specialist for treatment.
His mouth was so badly burned that he was unable to speak or eat, and the doctor was obliged to amputate the lower portion of the jaw in order to preserva the man's life.
The tradesman brought an action against both the specialist and the doctor for neglectful treatment. The doctor was acquitted, but the specialist was ordered to pay damages and costa.

Viscount Lee of Fareham, who pre- sided, in proposing the health of Sir Jagadis, said their guest had brought honour not only on himself but to his country; and, through his "country, to the Empire and to the whole of the civilised world. It had truly been said of him that he was the Darwin of botany. "I remember, when I was in Cal. cutta," proceeded Lord Lee, "Sir Jagadis told me that he had found it practically possible either to accelerate or retard the growth of a plant in such a way as to obliterate noxious insects. Take cotton- growing in Egypt, for instance. This cotton is attacked by the boll weavil, which grows to maturity when the cotton plant flowers. Now, according to Sir Jagadis Bose, if you retard or advance the flowering of the plant for a compara tively short periods few days would be sufficient-tha weevil will arrive and "find nothing doing. It will take mang years of evolutions for the maturity of the weevil and the flowering of the plant again to synchronise."
