THE "FOO CHEONG"" SEIZED STEAMER RELEASED BY STRIKE UNION.

A report states that the as Foc Cheong, previously on the Macao and Canton run, which was seized by the strike pickets and detained in Canton for some months past, has now been re- leased by the Strike Union. It is report ed that payment of $300,000 was made to secure the elesse.

The steamer is now being repaired, and is expected to be placed on the Macao Canton run again, "pending the final signing of the compact for the concession of running steamers for passenger service only between the two ports.

At the time of the steamer was seized, and since, several appeals have been made to the Canton Government for the release of the steamer, but all have hitherto been

to no purpose.

A Canton paper says the Bureau of the Merchant Protection and Smuggling Suppression Committee has discovered that pirate launches often frequent the rivers and indulge in plundering, and has decided upon suppressing them

The Navy Department has been in- structed to despatch gunboats to patrol the waters, and the Director of the Bureau has also ordered the gunboat Cho Kiang, to anchor off the Hsu Ching For so as to inspect incoming steamers and boats, thereby preventing pirste launches. from entering the river.

All mercantile steamers will be ins- pected before being allowed to come up. to Whampoa or Canton.
