DUG UP A CORPSE

He was an insurance broker, a quiet, well-conducted, eminently respectable man. There was a policy on his life for £4,000. He resolved that this sum should go to his family.

He found a good place for the motor accident. But his ear must have passenger, and the discovery and obtain- ing of a suitable passenger gave him a let of trouble.

Eventually he got tidings of the burial, in a shallow grave in the little cemetery Lant in the country near the village of Hancock, of the body of a male pauper. He went to the spot to rob the grave, but repairs to a bridge caused a night watchman to turn him back.

He then went to another country graveyard, where another male pauper had recently been buried, and proceeded to dig up the coffin.

He dared not use a light, and he was rendered very nervous by two wild cats which came out of the forest and prowird to and fro within a few feet of him.

He had chosen the grave of a pauper, 28 the coffin would be only 31. deep: Unscrewing the lid, be lifted out the body, which be slung over his shoulder and carried to his car.

He found the wild ents in the grave when he got back to fill it in: and the persistence with which they hung around. saarling and spitting when he threatened them with his shovel, distracted his mind from the details of his position.

He found quite a cavity when he had filled in all the earth for he had forgot ten to put the lid back on the coffin, and it, too, had been filed...

ARRANGING THE DISASTER. By this time the enterprising Mr. Beale had had quite enough of the job Abandoning his plan to leave the grave just as he had found. it, he made no Ettempt to dig it up again, but flung the coffin lid into some undergrowth, and left the spot.

What happened subsequently, is best described in his own words, na contained in the signed confession to the police, which landed him in Auburn Convict Prison.

FASHION'S DECREE. Furriers, create a ready market for their goods in a similar way. If fashion decrees that woman's chest and arms shall be left bare, she is forced to seek protection from the cold with the help of high-priced wraps. In summer she is. still at the mercy of the furrias, for even in climates where the thermometer reaches ninety degrees in the shade, she wears heavy furs. Yet no one dreamed of such an absurdity until the commer cial game became as acute as it is to-day.
