The police have done uncommonly well -splendidly, in fact-and-they would be the first to add that they have been as aplendidly helped by the special constable all over the country. Those who remem ber the great war know how valiantly and ungrudgingly the public were sorved by these volunteer Constables, who were at their posts day and night in all cases of difficulty and danger. Once again the country has been in peril-this time, un- fortunately, the enemy was within the gates--and once more the specials res ponded engrily to the call. The great majority of the war-time men turned up at their old posts, when not engaged on other dutina, and were gladly welcomed by the authorities. Their numbers, con. siderable though they were, were aug- mented by fresh recruits, drawn from men of all classes and occupations. Age wha so bar to enthusiasm and activity. The position in the rubber market is very different to what it was a few short months ago. In December, with the price at four shillings a pound, we all looked like making our fortunea Now it is under two shillings, and in- vestors are more than over convinced that rubber is funny thing to have your money in. Even the experts are at a less to explain the drop, except to say that the consumers must be over- stocked. But one would have thought that they could have seen this coming six months ago.
Still rabber at two shillings is a use ful and paying proposition. We can only hope that it stays like that and that there will be no return to the pre restriction days, when the commodity would not fetch the cost of production.
