Mr. Eugene Chen, until recently editor of the Min Pao, or People's Tribune in, Peking, has been appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in Canton, pending the return of Mr. Hu Han Min from his leave of absence! Dr. C. C. Wu was several times requested to take up this portfolio; but declined to do so.

Mr. Chen is a Straits-born Chinese and became a well-known figure to foreigners it China when editor of the Peking "Gazette and later editor of the Canton Gazette. For some years. Mr.

Chen was one of the private English secretaries to the late Dr. Sun Yat Sen and for a time director of the aviation

burenu in Canton.

Since the death of the late Kuomintang Chief. Dr. Sun, Mr. Chen has, been identi- fed with the Kuominchun and was to have been arrested at the same time as the Jate, Mr. Chao-Pin Ping, ile, however. escaped to the Legation Headquarters when the Kuominchur troops evacuated Peking early last month, and he succeed.

Yesterday at the Queen's the principal picture was a Metro production, Jazz. mania," starring Mae Murray in the role of Queen Ninon, an enthusiast of jazz and the ruler of a Balkan" kingdom which passes satisfactorily through the usual revolution. The picture will be screened again at all performances to-day.

There was a large gathering at the new building of the Chinese Catholic Young Men's Society, in Caine Road, yesterday afternoon, when the opening ceremony was performed by the Rev. Banchio, who was the inaugurator of the Society a low years ago.
