THE CANADIAN GOLD RUSH, HARDSHIPS OF THE WINTER TRAIL
WOLVES AND BLIZZARDS.
In the mining annals of Canada the famous gold rush of us to the Klondike, with its record of incredible hardships and romantic adventures, still holds pride of place, and later hegicas to mining Belds like Cobalt, Porcupine, and Rouya, all within reasonable peers of a railway, have been by comparison prosaic affairs.

At present however, any trustworthy appraisentent of the real value of thể dia. cavorica is premature, but it is` signi- ficant that two experienced mining or Banizations like the Dome and McIntyre companies are sending in at enormous expense several hundred tons of machi- cry for the development of their pro- perties.
Red Lake, which is a sheet of water 38 miles by eight, is probably a very agreeable place in midaummer, but in winter it is no place for invalids ar paupers. Flour costs :914 per, ewt., sugar 895, beans $30, and butter $1.50 per lb., with other food prices to corres pond.
But this year, unless the portonts de ceive, the scenes on the Klondike trail bid fair to be reproduced in a rush which has now begun to the new Red The new camp may or may not prove Lake goldfield, in the district of a second Klondike, but it has stirred Patricia. So encouraging were their reports that in the summer of 1825 several establishi ed mining companies, like Dome, Mel Intyre, and Nipissing, sent in geologica! experts, who made a thorough exami nation of the field. DOGS AT A PREMİUM.
There is now in progress towards Red Lake a veritable stampede of gold- seekers, eager to secure a stake in the new Golconda. The jumping-off place for Red Lake is Hudson, a frontier hamlet.. on the Transcontinental system, and there every train that arrives.is dumping off a fresh band of professional prospectors and adventurers of all kinds. Accommodation at Hudson is primitive and scanty, but the newcomers have no desire to stay, Red Lake, 140 miles away,, is their objective, and time is pre- cious.
For the more opuleat an aeroplane service, which lands a solitary passen ger, plus mail and some freight, at the camp in two or three hours, has been established, but the fare is $200 per person and $1 per lb. for baggage. A few horses are available, but the most popular beasts of burden are teams of husky" dogs, which are in such great demand that their price is now at least- $150 per head.

But many of the goldseekers can afford neither the air route nor a dog team, and fare forth on foot. The hardships of the journey are enough to test the stoutest physique: the trail is of the most primi tive kind, liberally sprinkled with fallen timber and positively dangerous at night. But even when earlier prospectors reached Red Lake, they found the ground covered with several feet of aniow, and the staking of claims was largely guess work. A recording office has been open- ed, and-3,000 acres have been marked off 700 claims hare actually been recorded, and a like number are awaiting regis tration. Even at this stage the camp is beginning to present a busy appearance, and the tents of the prospectors are strung out over a space of 18 miles.
