THE BOON OF SLEEP. NIGHT WATCHES OF TORTURE OR REPOSE.

The question of how long one should sleep has been the subject of many con- flicting rules and pronunciamentos from doctors and laymen, writes a correspon- dent in the Staterman. Each individual requires just so much sleep as will re build the bodily waste of the day's work, and so much as will restore the waste in the brain caused by the nervous drain of mental labour. This period can never be circumscribed by any general rule In the matter of sleep it is indeed a case. of one man's ment being another man's poison.

TOO MUCH SLEEP.

THE INFLUENZA COMPLEX.

{AY & DOCTOR.)

A reccas attack of influenza has convinced me that it is a much more (dificult task than I hail supposed to tell

the truth about anything.

On the day before I fell ill this world in which my lut is east (I am using the werd world" in the narrow scuse} seemed to be a pleasant sort of place. My friends seemed to be good friends.. My relations to be no worse than other people's relations.

Next morning, however, I learned to my surprise that that estimate of my lot was a mistaken one... liscovered, al- most before I was properly awake, that my brother was a most ungrateful fellow who had not once, in all our acquaint- auce, lifted hand or foot on my behalf.

I told him this at breukinst.)

And, as if to confirm my new estimate of his charneter, he lost his temper and reviled me. He said thing which, as I informed him. Lshould not care to res member.

+

That same morning i had trouble with CAP The the fellow who cleans my wehlele was not polished as it should have been. I examined it and Bow in what i manner the task of cleaning it had been scamped.

I thought. I said, that you were a good honest worker. I believed in you. Until yesterday I sware by you."

Ho sworn at me, Even my cat.

But two exam-

ples must suffice. I may say that I held the views I have just stated with grent tenacity for more than five days.

And then, one blessed morning. I wake! up and found that these views had utter ly deserted me. What had happened to make the sun shine again so brightly!

I remember once, long ago, when I was in country practice, giving a patient some belladonna in a bottle of medicine. (This drug, very occasionally, acts in a wholly unexpected and surprising man- ner.) My patient promptly saw & black hen perched on the top of his grandfather clock.

I stopped the belladonna and the blackj het tock fight. Later on my patient said to me:

"suppose that I must believe now that there was no hen on the glock Bus I can scarcely believe it, because I saw the hen with my own eyes.

17

On the morning on which I recovered from influenza I could serrerly believe that my brother was not my enemy, even though he was proving himself my beat friend. And ni for the car cleaner and the cat.

Too much sleep, on the other-hand may lead to a leaden feeling in the morning. The tissues have been renewed, and when the sleeper should have awakened and set about the day's work, he has induced sluggishaeas by his inaction.
