HONGKONG MISSIONS TO

SEAMEN

HOW THE BOYCOTT HAS AFFECTED THE WORK.

THE REPORT FOR 1929.

The annual report of the Missions to Seamen in Hongkong, which has just been issued, signed by the Rev. G. T. Waldegrave, Chaplain, deals, as was to be expected, very largely with the inter- ference in the work of the Missioä caused by the Strike and Boycott."

After describing how the work of the Institute was carried on., when the Staff left in June last, the report continues:

"The loss sustained by the Society owing to the Strike and Boycott is shown most clearly when we come to deal with statistics. The numbers of seafarers at tending our Church Services were serious- ly affected, a misfortune if it can be called so, which we shared with the branch in Shanghai. In both "stations" for Sunday after Sunday, where pre- viously the seafolk attendance had averaged about 25 or more according to the shipping in port, the numbers drop- ped to single figures. In spite of this, however, in Hongkong we are only some 120 down" on the 1994 Agures, while we are thankful to be able to report that there is alight increase in the number of attendances at Celebrations of the Holy Communion

Owing to the presence in port of so many of H.M. vessels for longer times than usual our indoor social figures show an increase, though those quoted only re cord attendances of seafarers at "shows' organised by us, and does not include ship's company denees which for the most part are run by the Ships' Dancing Clubs."

NORTH BORNEO PLANTERS

ASSOCIATION...

A NEW ORGANISATION.

At a meeting of the Committee of the North Borneo Chamber of Commerce held on April 9th, a letter was read from the Secretary of a meeting of estate managers held at Beaufort at which it was decided

to form a North Borneo Planters' Asso- ciation.

The letter said:Estate managers on this Coast bave decided that it is desir able that planting interests should have independent representation in North Borneo, and it is for that purpose that the Association has been formed

“The Association fully recognises that many occasions and in many directions mercial and mercantile interests, and when planting interesta will coincide with com- these occasions arise the North Boraco Chamber of Commerce can rely on our support and co-operation.

there should be an exchange of minutes Therefore, our Chairman suggests that of all meetings held by both bodies so that in any case where issues are at con fict there may be an immediate exchange of views before either party expresses its attitude to Government."

The Secretary was instructed to reply that the North Borneo Chamber of Com merce would be willing to co-operate in every way with the Planters' Association and to exchange minutes of meetings held.

It was pointed out, however, that mat- ters concerning planting interesta had always occupied a prominent place in the Uhamber's deliberations and the Cham ber still felt it was in a position to repre- sent the views and interests of its large planting membership.

Views pertaining to matters of mutual interest would always be exchanged with the new West Coast "Planters' Association;: but the Chamber reserved the privilege of independent action when deemed neces fary."

The beds occupied during the year also show a decrease, for it must be remem. Among those present at the Chamber bered that during part of the trouble men of Commerce meeting were: The Hon. were not allowed to sleep ashore, but had Mr. F. W. Pinnock (in the Chair), Mr. to return on board each right, and also A. Henne, Mr. G. Mavor, Mr. Sch for that some little time, only those men

Siew Boh, and Mr. C. K. Langlands (Hon. who were already boarding in the Secretary), Institute were able to sleep" there owing to the greatly diminish staff being only able to cope with that much of the work.

When we come to deal with finance... we find there the most evident results of all the trouble. And in this we have cause for very careful and anxious thought.

We started the year with an adverse balance of over $11,500, and our aim was to clear at least some of this off during 1926, Circumstaneca unfortunately proved against us, and for the rest of the twelve months all we could, hope to do was to keep the work going.

The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation were good enough to allow us to increase the mortgage on the Seamen's Institute from $60,000 800,000, covering not only the Reclama tion Fund. No. 2 Account, but also the
