When a distress call is made on the North Atlantic it is fairly safe to assume that such call is received by many ships and, maybe. coast stations; those calls which are received by only one ship, as Balmes in was the case with the ss. 1913, are exceptional.

Upon receipt of particulara regarding the position of the distressed ship, the wireless operators of the various ships report the distress call and give the position of the unfortunate vessel. The master of the ship then works out the distance between the two ships, and should this prove to be some two or three hundred miles, the operator will not im- mediately answer the distress call, but will stand by" in order to listen whe
