BOLTON WIN THE “CUP. SCRSES OF ENTHUSIASM AT WEMBLEY FINAL

WEMBLEY, April 24th.

The Association Cup-Final took place here to-day, in dull and cold weather, when 92,000 spectators, including His Majesty the King, saw Bolton Wanderers bea: Manchester City by one goal to`nil, Jack, the inside-right, scoring in the 34th minute of the second baff.

.

There was the customary enthusiasm, particularly between the rival Lan- enshire sections, who were conveyed from the North in a series of specials, in

addition to motors charabanes.

Twenty minutes from the start the enclosures were full and the crowd was allowed into the arena, but there was no disorder.

Bolton started off with great dash, which was not maintained. Th: City's defence settled down and kept Bolton, at bay, and thrn Manchester took the offensive. The Bolton goal had arrow escapes, it up to the interval there wAX

RO score.

Bolton returned to the attack, Joe Smith,, inside-left, initiating movements skilfully. Play deteriorated, to rough- ness in a desperate fight to score, and then in the 34th-minute, Butler, right winger, hooked the ball to Vizard, who fouled to Jack, the latter driving high into the net.

Manchester exerted the most strenuous efforts to equalise, and did not have the best of luck. Bolton were content to ré- main on the defensive, and though severely taxed, held out until the whistle, winning by the only goal.

There was intense excitement at the finish. The crowd swarmed on to the field, and carried off the goal-scorer aboulderhigh.

"

Amid deafening cheers, Bolton's captain, Joe Smith, received the Cap from Eis Majesty, who also presented medals to both teams..

The Senate is announced to tave pa animously adopted-a rezolution calling for the rejection of the Dollar b.d by the Shipping Board as being too low.

Continuing, the report saya-Senator McNary, republican, Oregon, who "in- troduced the resolution said, "if Dollar obtains the line, the Dollar interests would have a monopoly of the shipping in the Pacific, and that they would operate the line to the detriment of thy North-west, as their interests are in California"

The United Press anys the Shipping Board has delayed consummation, of the sale and is awaiting a ruling from the Department of Justice as to whether the Senate resolution compels the Board to advertise once more for bids.

AMERICAN LANGUAGE,

A headline which recently appeared in the Chicago Tribune puzzled even an American reader, who, wrote to the American Mereusy offering to give com- plete works of Walter Pater (1) to any- one who could tell him what it meant The baffling inscription ran

Midway Sign Limey Prof. to Dape Yank Talk. In due course he received his reply to the effect that the headline is good American enlivened by faint traces ERMINIO SPALLA TO MÈET BASQUE of sporting page and nautical infusnan"

Midway,

his informant

explained

signs means University of Chicago, means engages; limey" means English being a shortened form of time-juncer," or an English seaman, so called from the old days of sailing vessels when lime juice. was carried as a preventive, "of scurvy. "To dope" means to make a careful study of a matter. "Tank talk" means American English. The cryptic headline therefore means "The University of Chicago has enlisted the aid of an Eng fish scholar in order that Americans may better understand their own language ?”.
