Unpropitious weather marked the first extra race meeting of the Hongkong Jockey Club held at the Happy Valley race course on Saturday. An hour or so prior to the scheduled time for starting. a torrential rainstorm began, and con tinued more or less throughout the after-

noon.

The middle of the Valley became flood. ed in quick time, and consequently the course was also in a water-logged condi- tion. In the public enclosure mud and water had accumulated, and although a batch of coolies laboured to sweep it away, it was to no avail.

Considering the weather, the attend ance was remarkably good, and the cash sweep and pari-mutuel were well patronis- ed. The racing started off with a very big dividend (3188) and the returns throughout compared favourably with other races.

THE RACING.

The races, particularly for the jockeys: and ponies were run under great dif ficulty, but the going was good. It was practically impossible to pick out the respective jockeys and ponies as the races were being run, and very often it was not until the winning-post was reached that the identity of the rider and his mount could be ascertained. In each race the jockeys returned soaked to the skin and caked with mud.

Most of the spectators crowded in the betting pavilion, and mose of them were content to gamble without seeing the races. A large number had arrived be lore the rain began, and amongst them were a number of ladies who had donned Spring dresses. In fact, the feature of the meeting was the utter disregard which those present had for the elements. There was only one hitch in the day's racing, when in the second race. Regent, the favourite, ridden by Mr. Brodie was left at the "starting post. Many of the ponies were appearing in public on beavy going for the first time.

Racing bonours were fairly evenly dis- tributed. Mr. T. W. Doyle rede two firsts and two seconds in five attempts,
