HONDA'S EASY WIN
A very interested prowd turned up to watch Honda appear for the first time thịs scnsón în the first round of the Open Sipples. The ex-champion was pitted against Bloxham who proved no match for him, but the flatter gave of his best and delighted those present with several aces from forehand cross drives Bloxham began very well by, evening the scores after four games had been played, but could only secure one more in the match subsequently.

By reason of Ng Se Kwong's with drawal, Honda is now hot favourite for the Open Bingles, and on yesterday's form he bid fair to be a most difficult player for the other competitors to die lodge. He was not called upon to give of his best yesterday, but showed that he is still the same cool and resourceful, though sometimes rockless, player that ho is known to be Hs exhibited signa of retaining his formidable forehand cross-court drive, which is his chief

NG BZK DREUNG BEATEN,
Another well known exponent has goño by the board on Ng Sze Cheung's unox- pected failure against Yow Man Kit yesterday in the second round of the Open Singles. The match attracted not a littlo interest, especially among the Chiness followers of the game, and ended after a somewhat oxciting finish in the Gith set.
Ng Sze Cheung did not play up to re- putation and disappointed the spectators by his pat-ball strokes throughout the match, and frequent gallery play. He began very well by securing the first set by judicious placing and seemed to be able to make short work on his opponent. But Yow Man Kit proved a worthy op pouent, and immediately got settled to

MAN AND THE GREAT "APES. SIR A. KEITH ON THE TAUNGS SKULL.
In a lecture at the Royal College of Surgeons,, the President of the College (Sir John Bland-Sutton) being in the chair, Sir Arthur Keith discussed the boarings of the fossil skull discovered near Taungs, South Africa, on current views concerning the origin of Man and the Ape, and summarised the latest views (partly based on now evidence) of Euro-
The lecturer said it was now certain Pean anatamista as to this discovery, There are those who think that an that the skull was that of a young enth ropaid ape, one which was cousin to the two existing African anthropoid apos the gorilla and the chimpanzee...... · The, claim originally made by Professor Dart that the discovery had revealed an ex- binet family of beings which occupied a position intermediate between anthro- poids and humanity could no longer be upheld. The geological evidenceaup. plied by Profesor H. E. Young, of the University of Witwatersrand, made it clear that the skull had been entombed in a limestone bluff during the Pleisto- cene period, at which time the earlier forms of mankind had already been erolved in other parts of the world.
The discovery was important for the light it. threw, not on the evolution of man, but on the history of man's nosrest living relatives, the great anthropoids of

Hitherto our knowledge of ex- tinet anthropoid apes had had to be based on fossil fragments of a jaw or on isolated teeth, but in the present instänee Professor Dart had succeeded in reveal- ing details of face, nose, teeth, skull, and even certain features of the brain, so that we thew with some degree of certainty the exact nature of the Taungs ápe. À full analysis of its structural characters showed that it shared some with the chimpanzee, others with the gorille, while others were peculiar to itself. In size of brain the Taungs anthropoid stood above chimpanzees of age, below gorillas in the fourth year of age, the age reached by the Taungs ape. This fossil ape had a narrow, long brain and head. All living anthropoid apes had brains and heads which were relatively wide, tending towards roundness, save among gorillas, where long-headed or dolichocephalic individuals did occur oc- casionally. Thus the discovery at Taungs showed that among anthropoid apes there was, just as among human beings, a ten-

DISAPPEARANCE OF THE GODET.
One of the features which has struck me most in my round of the grandes maisons is the deduction of fare in most of the models. The godet has practically disappeared, its place being taken by skirt flared ever so discreetly so that movement rather than width is given to the silhouette. Likewise, pleating is so fine and incredibly supple that it seems to add no more to the line than a row
of tucks or stitching would do. For these two reasons, the line will be in-

Yet that The same tendency was seen in many it was destined to pass through stages which lead on to the full structural status of the anthropoid there could be no doubt. "At the time of death its first permanent molar or check teeth were just" cutting the gums. Although the milk teeth were small-as was also the case in young gorillas the permanent teeth were of large size. They were much larger than in the chimpanzee, and almost as large as in the gorilla. In size of jaw the Taungs ape must have exceeded the chimpanzee.
