The Temporary Reserve Unit of the Shanghai Municipal Police is a new organization devised to meet emergency calls in districts where there may be strikes or riots. The unis may be called to any part of the city by the inspecters in charge of the various stations, where its specialized assistance will be utilized to prevent disturbances and bloodshed. The important fact in connection with the organization of the unit is that al though it was created to put down riots, it is so organized and its tactics are so planned that the end may be achieved without resorting to riße Bre and with out the resultant bloodshed.

During the last five years the writer has seen many films in the Colony but now the position is such that it is almost im possible to visit three of the local amuse- ment houses during a week without having seen at least two of the films shown there before, at least oneg, and very often twice. The difficulty is that it is not easy to tell whether one has seen a picture before without watching the commencement of same and by that time the money has been paid and the line of least resistance is to have a gentle snooze until the National Antheui commences. All honour to Hang- zong for giving its quarter of a million sterling to enable us to make a start Perhaps the First Lord had not been re- minded that Singapore is also contribut- ing no inconsiderable sums for the pur- poses of the naval base. Land that was wanted we bought and paid for. Roads have been constructed. The Causeway, built entirely at Malaya's experiee, is po inconsiderable factor of saving for the Imperial Government, since it makes the Straits into a tropical Rosyth, with only one entrance to be defended. The Muni cipality of Singapore is providing the water supply for the naval base. Possibly the erection of the new pontoon dock will be undertaken from the resources of "Malaya, saving the Admiralty great ex. pense in towing or importing labour, it it had to be done departmentally.
