À SHAREHOLDER'S CRITICISM OF ABSENTEES. The first ordinary yearly meeting of shareholders of the Hongkong Telephone Company. Limited, was held yesterday at 12 noon in the Board Room of the Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited, for the purpose of receiving a Statement of Accounts and the Report of the Directors for the period ended December 31st, 1925, and re-electing two directors and the auditors.

The CHAIRMAN said:-Gentlemen, -The reportand, accounts for the hall year ended 31st December, 1925, are before you, and, with your permission, I will take them as read.........

As it has been decided that the finan cial period shall end on 31st December each year, the accounts before you show the result of the working during the six months, July-December, 1925. The net profits of 8109,404.51, after allowing for the full depreciation on the plant and properties, a bonus to the inden- tured staff and half of the preliminary expenses written off, is, I feel sure you will agree, a satisfactory result."

The period under review has been a most difficult one owing to the local political trouble, but in spite of the difficulties the telephone service was maintained without interruption. The staff, augmented by certain ladies who volunteered their services, cheerfully car ried out long hours of duty. and under took unaccustomed. manual work, and I new express the Company's appreciation to them, and to the ladies who se kindly assisted the staff, of the services, so readily given during the worst period of the troubic.

The Acting British Consul-General at Saigon has forwarded to the Department of Overseas Trade some notes on the cultivation of rubber in Cochinchina (French Indo-China), which was intro- duced in 1897 by & private individua named Raoul. He brought with him 2,000 plants from the Federated Malay States which were distributed between the Botanical Gardens at Saigon, the Pasteur Lostitate at Nhatrangvin Annem, and a number of French planters in Cochinchina.
