"TOTTENHAM'S FORCEFUL DISPLAY.

More progress was made in the Hong- kong Cricket Club annual lawn tennis tournament yesterday afternoon when quite a number of ties were played off.

1. E. Tottenham, who met and defeat- ed C. W. Cheng with ease, was the chief Attraction and his performance was the most forceful seen up to date. Totten- ham played with his hand and was always ready to receive his "opponent's returns before the ball came to his side of the court. A feature of his play was bis consistent, forehand drive, when he hit from the top of the hounce, the ball travelling at fast spred and landing with! good length. His ess shots were most effective auf best his opponent very often. At the het Tottenham volleyed with gracefulness and necuracy.

He avoided playing his backhand, and his anticipation allowing him time to run over to meet the balls with his forehand. Against a faster player he would find this harder to do.

Cheng's best whs in the beginning, and at times afterwards he put in delightful strokes, but was totally" eclipsed by his

pponent's good form."

PASSENGER TRAFFIC.

A SINGAPORE COMMENT.

The Singupare Free Press, in a leading artiolė says:—

1:

Singapore is committed to the replace ment of its trams by railless buses and some of the new vehicles are in the course

of erection in the Harbour Board Go downs at Keppälrd. The new company has been very vigorously at work since the lengthy legal formalities were, con. cluded, and, curiously enough, the trams see

more popular and nearer paying their way now than at any previous time in their history. They are fully loaded at times, occasionally over-loaded, though justifies the running expenses. The rails there are spells when the traffic hardly are being attended to, but seem almost to have reached, the limit of their lives. It was reading an account of a meeting in Hongkong that set us thinking of the tram vs. oranibus question. Mr. Bernard, the chairman of the Hongkong Electric Tramways. Co., took the occasion of the twenty-first birthday of the concern to discuss the ery of scrap the trans, which, by the way, has again been re- vived at Home. He laid it down that Buses were ideal for country trac, where the service will not warrant high capital expenditure, but in towns, where a four minute service or less is required," the electric tramway reigned supreme. Mr. Bernard quoted the case of Hongkong. that in the two days preceding Chinese New Year 1925, the Hongkong Tram- ways carried a quarter of a million pas- sengers, besides monthly ticket holders, and he asked "Can one visualise the state of the atrects between say Garden Road and Sincere's had we attempted to carry this number of people by motor deck buses to replace eighty tram cars, ouaibuses. provision of travelling accommodation for the workers. Eliminating the joy rider, not a small element in the traffic, the extension of the town has made it absolutely necessary for men and women and children to travel considerable dis tances for work, or household manage ment, or for school. It zeems, at present, as if all the trams and buses and rikishas combined can hardly cope with the num bers that wish to travel. When the trama bave gone, they must be replaced by an equivalent in electric buses, which, no doubt, has been carefully provided for. It seems hardly possible to do with fewer motor buses than at present, at the rush hours. Rikishas continue to be a favourite means of getting about and the number on the streets does not scem ex- cessive for the wants of the populace. When there are more rikishaa than pasí sengers, the number will automatically decrease. Till then it would be wrong to try and deprive the poor of their favourite means of transport for any auch reason us that they are not skilled in the rules of the road nor thoughtful of other vehicles. That applies to more vehicles than the rikishas. Those who advocate, nbolition of rikishas,, because they are a nuisance, do not sufficiently study the needs of the poor. Unless the rikisha is wanted, it will not stay. And this ultimately will settle the vexed ques- tion of trams vs. buses of kinds, or other modes of locomotion.
