The Ambasador pointed out that the average price of rubber for the last year) was about 73 cents (3a Old.), and the Average for the last five years had been Labout 39 or 33 conta (la. id. or Is 4jd). He emphasised the fact that neither the British Government nor that of the Straits Settlements gets anything out of the present prices except so far as in- creased prosperity increases the revenue derived from ordinary taxation. Further, he emphasised the point that the restric tions are in no way discriminatory nor simed at the American consumer, since the British consumer all the world over pays just as much as the American and, incidentally, objects to doing so.

The Ambassador ended by saying-
In these circumstances I hope you will agree with me that the words "extortion," "hold-up," "gouging," and so forth, which have been so frequently used in this connection are, as Mark Twain said of the report of his own. death, perhaps & trifle exaggerated.

A FOOTNOTE TO LITERARY HISTORY.
MORLEY'S LIFE OF GLADSTONE
There is a footnote to English literary Eistory behind the announcement that the house of Hodder and Stoughton will shortly issue an abridged edition, with a preface by Mr. Masterman, of Lord Morley's "Life, of Gladstone.!!
The book was published by the Mac- millana, with whom Morley was long intimately associated, and they have made it the most successful political biography of modern time. No doubt they prefer to continue it in its fall }- form, and that and another circumstance, would explain the going of the abridge ment elsewhere, for the book is the property of the Gladstons family.
They gave Morley £10,000 to write it, & handsome but not. an undue fes, considering that he spent three years on the task, and, apart from help in sorting out the mass of material and making the questions, wrote it all with his own hand. Later, in appreciation of his and- ila triumph, he received a second cheque) for £3,000 from his friends, the Glad-i alones, so altogether his reward s £13,000.
It was a literary affair in which every body was made, happy, but one just wanders two hinge, says a writer in the Evening Standard: whether Morley, it he had devoted the three years to books of his own and he certainly left un written one which he had contemplated- would have earned as much, or more,
