We have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter forwarding a letter from the Colonial Secretary on the subject of Police Rates on Buildings hired by the Ordnance for Military purposes and the opinion of the Attorney General on that subject.

We must beg leave most respectfully to protest firmly against the contribution here attempted to be levied on Military Officers who, whatever be their pay, are called upon to contribute any portion of it in aid of the Colonial Government, as per the following:
