His Worship said that it was suspicious that the notes were tendered at different ticres, and as defendant could not give satisfactory "explanation, he was sent to prison for six months with bard labour.

CHEQUE WHICH DISAPPEARED. YOUNG CHINESE SHOP ASSISTANT CHARGED.

A young Chinese shop assistant was charged before Mr. Lindsell at the Central

with Magistracy yesterday, failing to account for a cheque for $1,950 which had been given him by his master to cash.

The master of the shop said that he had given the cheque to the defendant to cash at the bank, but he failed to return with the money.

Defendant said that he had handed the cheque to a friend to cash it for him: but he had entrusted it to another man, who had disappeared.

Detective Sergean: McEwen, who was in charge of the case, applied for a re. mand, which was granted.

CHINA'S LOANS.

ANOTHER ADDITION TO

DEFAULTER'S LIST..

Another external loan of the Chinese Government has defnitely entered the defaulter's list, the Hukhang Railways & per cent. Gold Loan, 1911. This is the largest of the Chinese louus on which coupons are overdue, the outstanding amount of the principal being £3,810,800. A year ago the mid-December coupon was not paid at due date, but it was met alter a, delay of about six weeks. Whether the non-payment will this time prove a matter of so short a period cannot be predicted, but misgivings are increased by the fact that this is the third default on a Chinese Government bond since the end of Octo- ber, and if the two "non-secured loans known to the London market are included there are now five issues on which the service has been suspended. The list is As follows:

The General threat- ens to punsh in accordance with military £11,435,600 laws any person or persons, who dare to disobey his instructions. The order of the Peking Government has been ignored.
