LIFE OF A RUBBER TREE VIEWS OF REPRESENTATIVE MEN,
An expert's views on the subject are given by a correspon.font to the Financial Timea as to the economic life of a rubber tree. In the recently published American report on The Plantation Rubber In dustry in the Middle East," compiled by Mr. David M. Pigaf, the views of over 70 representative pun are summarised as follows:
1-Do old trees on a European rubber estate show a tecline in lekit In reply to this question, 20. sail there was no evidence of such a decline; several saw ne reason for any decline in rubber which 'received proper treatment. (Cey- loh planters generally fell into this group.) Fifteen said that rubber, not properly treated in the past showed a decline. Twenty-six said there was evi denes of a decline; of this number, two limited their reference to certain types of noil.
-What is the productive age of a. Pubber tree! In gesponse. 16 felt there was a lack of reliable evidence, never- theless believed that the tree must have a definite life. Only eight ventured o figure, two of whom thought 3 years would mensum the productive peric ene thought 30 years, four thought 35 years, and one thought 40 years. Quit a number thought that the existing old rabber areas had reached a minimum preaction when from 12 to 15 years old,
Mr. Figart found that there 5518 general agreement that much of the res triction of production during the last two or three years was enforced by the necessity of resting large areas. Such resting is undoubtedly beneficial, and res aults in increased yields, for a time at. least; and some authorities go so far as to say that the policy of always rest- ing a portion of the estate will be per
macent.
Much depends upon the treatment' the tree receives during the first 20 years or so. Take, for example, the largest of the rubber trees planted in 1878 by. Sir. Henry Wickham in the Heneratgada Botanical Gardens, Ceylon. This tree yielded: 93 lb. of dry rubber in 1900, 53 ib. of dry rubber in 1910, 87 lb. of dry rubber in 1911, 86 lb. of dry rubber in 1012. 65 lb. of dry rubber in 1913.1 In August, 1913, tapping was discontinued. The above figures speak for themselves, proving what can be done for the rubber tre which is well cared for,
