The most eligible officer in the Police, to undertake the duties of Assistant Superintendent during Mr. Caldwell's absence, is Deputy Inspector Clifton, whom I respectfully recommend may be appointed.
I beg to apply for His Excellency's direction as to the proportion of Caldwell's salary which shall be allotted to Deputy Inspector Clifton.

I am directed by His Excellency the Governor to inform you that during Mr. Caldwell's absence, the duties of Interpreter to the Supreme Court in the Chinese language will be performed by the Interpreters of the Chief Magistrate's Court; and the Interpretation in Malay and Hindoostani will be conducted by Mr. P.V. Statwick (also of the Chief Magistrate's Court).
This latter person is to receive half of Mr. Caldwell's Salary drawn through the Supreme Court, from the 1st instant.
