POLICE RECREATION CLUB:

FUNCTION.

There was a happy function at Happy Valley on Now Year's Day when the Police Recreation Chub gave its annual entertainment for the children. CO Ia consequence af-many of the offers having to be on duty at the fire at the Hongkong Hotel, the programme bad to be somewhat curtailed, but nevertheless a very enjoyable time was spent by children, parents and friends.

Many novel and interesting items wore contained in the programme for the siders and towards the close of the afternoon there was a decided increase in the attendance:

The arrangements for the New Year party, were made by Mr. W. Kent, assist ed by Mesars. H. E R. Marks, A. R. Clark, A. Reynolds and A. W. Grimmitt; while Mrs. Kent and other, ladies ren- dered valuable help in other directions.

The prizes were presented at the cen clusion of the sports by Mrs. T. H: King in the absence of Mrs. Wodehouse, wife P. J. Wodehouse, C.I.E. of Mr. P.

Mr. T. H. King (Director of Criminal Intelligence) returning thanks on behalf of his wife, made reference to the un- fortunate fire at the Hongkong Hotel which had interfered with the sports, owing to police officers being called away for duty at the scene of the conflagration The Hongkong Hotel he said, and parti cularly Mr. J. Taggarts had alwaye been among the most ardent supporters of the sports and had generously con- tributed to the funds. Mr. King express- ed thanks to the China Provident Loan and Mortgage Company, Ltd, and to the other supporters to the prize list, and he also warmly congratulated the Sports Committee on the excellent way in which they had made arrangements for the function.

Cheers were heartily given for the donors of prizes, the committee, Mrs. Kent and other helpers.

Following the distribution of prizes, the Xmas tree was stripped of its burden and the gifts banded to the children.

A very happy time was 'spent by both children and grown-ups at the Kowloon Cricket Club on the afternoon of New

Year's Day when the 21st annual child ren's sports were held.

Among the large gathering present were the Right Rev. C. R. Duppuy (Bishop of Victoria), the Rev. G. R. Lindsay (Vicar of St. Andrew's, Kow loon), the Iter. J. Horace Johnston (Union Church, Kowloon) and the Rev. G. E. Arrowaraith. Also present was Lady Clementi, who at the conclusion of the sports presented the prizes to the successful young competitors.

Catering was in the hands of Messri. Wiseman's and the Band of the ist Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment played during the afternoon.

The boy scarcely had left when, it is said, Mr. Powell picked up a loaded revolver and shat himself in the head, A lady in an adjolsing room heard Mrs. Powell's cries and rushed in, finding Mr. Powell on the floor, bleading profusely and Mrs. Powell in a state of collapse, Medical aid promptly was summoned and the police informed, and Mr. Powell was removed with all haste to the General. Hospital For a time there. were hopes that he would recover, but early on Christmas morning he collapsed and died. Mr. G. W. King, H.M. Coroner, opened an inquest on December 29th and after taking evidence of identification ordered an adjournment for further investigation. Mr. Powell served in the war and it is

understood that his health suffered as a consequence. He further had been con- siderably worried of late over personal business matters-N-C. Daily News.
