ROMANTIC CLAIM TO AN "EARLDOM.

“VERBAL" MARRIAGE IN A SLOOR ALLEGED,

STORY OF SO YEARS AGO,

The romantia claim involving the Sea- deld Earldom made by Mr. Alexander Grant retired, tutor, over 70 years of age, now living in Cromwell-road, South Kensington, has been occupying the Court of Session at Edinburgh.

The action is against the present Coun tess of Seafeld, who is aged 19, and whe succeeded to the title in 1918 and the nearest heirs of the Countess of Seafield who died in 1911, and the trustees and executors of the late Countess.

"Not only is the Seafield title at stake, but also vast income from estates of more than 300,000 acres....

Mr. Grant eläins të be the eldest lawful son of the saventh Earl of Scafeld, and the first Baron Strathspey, and as such, all rights and privileges of a child born in wedlock. His case is that his mother was the Hon. Caroline Stuart, youngest daughter of the 11th Baron Blantyre, who' in 1880 was married in London to the Earl of Senfield,

He asks the Court to prove a lawful marriage by verbal declaration before witnesses in 1946 on board & sloop off the

town of Cullen, in, the North of Scot

land.

The seventh Earl of Senfield was born in 1915. After service, as a midshipman be qualified as lieutenant before retiring from the service.

He assumed the title of Viscount Reid- haven in 1840, succeeded to the Earldom in 1833 was created frst Baron Strath- sory in 1938, and died in 1981. The Hon. Caroline Stuart was born in 1830 and died in 1917.

SECRET SAILING.

Mr. Grant alleges that Caroline and the Viscount Reidhaven met at Dechfoar of Beaufort Castle in the north of Scotland in 1843 or 1846, and became intimate.

Arrangements were made, apparently by Lord Blantyre, her brother, and Lord. Reidhaven, to have Caroline brought quietly to the neighbourhood of the Sea field estates. She sailed secretly from the Clyde in a sloop on board of which was Lord Reidhaven and other persons of title, friends and relatives of Caroline and the Viscount.

The vessel failed to make Cullen Har- bour, and therefore, in the presence of those on board, Viscount Reidhaven and Caroline entered into a marriage by verbal declaration.

The vessel arrived off Banff, and the party, compelled partly by stormy wea ther and partly by the condition of Caro- line, sought an immediate landing. Caro- line was carried ashore on a seaman's back and taken to the house of a Mrs. Cormack, in High-street, Banfi.

There. that same night she gave birth to a child. Ms. Grant claims to be that child.

Steps, Le says, were taken to conceal his parentage, and about a week after birth he was taken to Fochabers and handed over to the charge of Mrs. Grant: | the wife of a gardener at Gordon Castic. LIBERAL FUNDS..

In August, 1950, Viscount Reidhaven and Caroline went through a public ecre mony of marriage.

In 1852 the. Eärl and Countess appear- ed in Banff in support of one of the can- didates, and were recognised as the lady and gentleman who had landed from the vessel in 1846, and to whom a son had been born.

WAB

Mr. Grant proceeded from school to Aberdeen University, where he. liberally supplied with funds through his foster parents.

Subsequently be acted as an Army coach, and as a tutor in various schools in England.

Mr. Grant declares that he bears* a noticeable family likeness to Viscount Reidhaven in features, gait, and man- nerisms, and that he also has certain traits of resemblance to his mother Caro- line.

son

Defendants deny that Mr. Grant is the of Viscount Reidhaven and the Countess deafield, or of either of them. They state that Viscount Reidhaven did aat meet his future wife until after 1846,

They say that Mr. Grant and his friends have been making inquiries for about, twenty years, and that these in- quiries have been the sole or main source of the unfounded rumours apon which he now seeks to found his case.

The present Lord Strathspey is not among the defendants to Mr. Grant's action, as he himself contemplates a claim to the Faridoid through, the Committee of Privileges in the House of Lords.
