YACHTING. SATURDAY'S OPENING CRUISE.
The Opening Cruise of the Royal Hongkong Yacht Club this season was held on Saturday and proved a great success. The weather was ideal. There was a large attendance and some good razing, the contests between the Service boats, and the Berthon collapsible sub marine boats, arouing particular, in.
terest.
The best event of the day, however, was the four-car race between the Royal Navy and the Club. It was a ding-dong atruggle, and the result was in doubt up to the end. Just before reaching the winning post the Navy spurted and just

THE COMMODORE'S
SPEECH.
At the conclusion of the racing the Commodore, Mr. E. W. Carpenter, in a short speech welcomed the visitors and then called upon Mrs Carpenter to pre- sent the prizes,
Mr. E. W. Carpenter said "It is my privilege today to thank you, on behalf of the Chub committes and members for your attendance at this official opening I cannot day of our yachting season. let this occasion pus without refer- ence to Sir Matthew Nachan, who is the Colony just passing through now. Sir Matthew when Governor here, WILN one of our patrons and it was owing to the interest he took in the Club that we are the occupiers of this very fine site. (Hear, hear.)
The original site selected was that on which Watson's Soda Water factory now stands; it was mostly water then, but when Sir Matthew Nathan visited with the Committee of which I was one, he strongly recommended us to take this site, which was also ander water and I am sure that you will agree that time has proved the value of his recommen- dation. He was also the originator of the Hoag Four cared races that used to be so popular and created such a lot of keenness among the junior members of the various local frus. He present ed the original cup and drew up the
