My Lord,

Hongkong, China, 28th October, 1850.

Having had repeated attacks of fever during the last three summers I have passed in Hongkong my Medical advisers have strongly recommended me to return to Europe early in the next year;

I have consequently applied to His Grace the Commander-in-Chief to be relieved from the Command of the Troops in China which, when acceded to, will occasion the resignation of my Commission as Lieutenant Governor of Hongkong.

Apparently, by some omission in the Contract between the Lords of the Admiralty and the Oriental Steam...,
