* SINCE THE STRIKE,
The current isins of the Queen's College magazine, The Yellow Dragan, the publication of which was suspended during the afrike, contains interesting details of the public-spirited activitios of the teaching staff during that crying period. Says the report:
Out of the confusion in which Secon dary Education formerly weltered there have emerged, in recent years, two ixed standards of attainment, corresponding roughly to the ages of 10 and 18, respec tively. The First Examination is taken at 18 by a great many boys. The

Many London business men prefer Loudon Matriculation. They know its name. They believe it to be a good, safe test, and to be proof that a boy has at an rate done some useful work at school
13
Many schoolmasters, on the other hand, prefer the Oxford and Cambridge School Certificate Examination, and for certain definite reasons, some of which it may he convenient to state here. In the first place, the syllabus of the School Certi- Scate Examination is more elastic, and therefore can be more easily adapted to the needs of 'boys on different "sides of a public school. For example, Classical boys can take "general science paper, the preparation for which makes fittie demand on their time but ensures some knowledge of general scientiße prin- ciples. Seconilly, the School Certificate qurations in mathematics and some other subjects are less stereotyped, and, there, fore less easily anticipated by the "cram- Thirdly, the School Certificate science papers include practical work, while the London Marticulation. papers in chemistry (for instance) enn be passed by a well-crammed toy who has never entered a science laboratory.

It should in fairness bo mentioned that some of these objections to London matriculation could be removed by im- proved syllabuses, such as those which will be introduced next year in lang; uages and history. But as things stand at present, we may reasonably compare the matriculation" to an article based upon standardized mas production, which bolds the market chiefly by part prestige,
My object, however, is not so much to criticise any one of these examinations as to point out what I conceive to be the duty of the schoolmaster and that of the
aploger, respectively."

Mr. Hamilton and Mr. Wallington did splendid work by collecting and distributing food to over fifty families at East Point. One of their greatest; joys in connection with their striko duties was to arrive at the Dairy Farm shop about 7.30 am. with their big order, sent themselves comfortably in a corner: behind the counter while their order was being attended to, and laugh at and pass sarcastic remarks to their three con- frères who were always very busy at that time. Mr. Evans who loves a life on the ocean wave served aboard one of the barbour launches, and Mr. O'Connor, after a few days in the Imports Office, joined the Hongkong Volunteers. The ladies were not idle, Mrs. Stub- hings whose energy is as great as that! of Mr. Upsdell was Post Mistress at the Peak and also did a great deal of very good work at the Peak Hotel. Mrs Cormack worked hard at the Matilda Hospital na did Miss Grant at Lauriston.
Most of the Chinese Staff were doing daty at the Censor's office. It is also pleasing to record that several of our scholars ignored the intimidators and did good work during these trying times. Several joined the St. John's Ambulance Brigade, some did consor work, and one sturdy youth drove a tram car.
All these scholders are back at school again and now understand the meaning of the pbraso He laughs best who laughs last."
The magazine also records two amus ing stories of Mr. B. Tanner, the Head- master, in connection with the recent award to him. of the Imperial Service Order.

An hour later, while waiting at the Hongkong Hotel for a taxi to convey him to Government House, Mr. Tanner received a terrific slap on his tender' shoulder from an unknown and hilarious admirer who congratulated him ou a ceiving the O.B.E. What the new 18.0. said wo.do not know what he thought we do not like to imagine, comments the chronicter.
In the first place the schoolmaster (pernment House, his neck and shoulders which class I myself belong) should aim at sending in all boys of 16 for a "First examination. He will require so to balance his timetable that his pupils will be able to pass in the several subjects which form part of a general education before the stage at which specialization begins, and he knows from experience that already at 18 the classical boy will find difficulty in passing in mathematics, and vice-veria, English, again, presents difficulties of its own even to well-educat ed boys. I am glad to see that London University in altering its English syllabus. But the opportunity must be
taken while it is offered: if a boy does not pass his "First" examination at 16, he will be less likely to do so later." If, for instance, he goes to the Bar, he will have to pass the Law Preliminary, and as a grown man have to take up, again the elementary work in subjects with which he is no longer familiar. The schoolmaster should assist his boys to pass an exempting test at the proper time before they leave school.
BUSINESS MAN'S DUTY The business man also has a duty namely, to give the schools a." lead ""by taking it plain that he values a certi- ficate of general education, and that he
