WEEK-END MAILS..

There was, as there has been for the last few weeks, a heavy concentration of mails during the week-end, this keeping the mails department of the Post Office working at high pressure.

Oo. Saturday the Home mail rid Suez (letters and papers, London, Sep- tember 3rd, and parcels August 27th) arrived by the P. and G. & Khien. The total mail, landed consisted of 498 bags of letters and papers, of which 11 bags were from the United King- dom. There were also 102 bags of par- cels from Home.

May unkind things have been said about motorists, mostly by people who have never driven a car. It is often forgotten that the automobile is a very. real boon, and that anyone who arrange it prefers to travel by car rather than by chair, rickaha or even Peak tram. The people deserving of censure are not a very few motorists collectively, but careless or selfish individuis. It there is to be any real improvement in Hong kong in this matter it will only be brought about by encouraging the cantious drivers and obtaining their co-operation Das-and Shanghai. gers will be reduced if road improvements are carried out wherever possible. There is, just now, an "economy stunt," but there could be no greater mistake than that of postponing road-improvements.

The real menace in this Colony is the big car. The weight of pleasure vehicles, exeluding, of course, the motor busses, varies from about ten hundredweight up to, say. two and a half tons. It is ob- vious that the small fight car, with, at the most, four passengers, is much more easily controlled than the huge" seven

senters that so often, carry as many as ten or twelve people. These hig cars block the roads and make it difficult to see any traffic beyond them.
