the charm that outshines all others, when the lips part in a smile, is the gleam of daintily polished teeth, a charm which Calvert's Tooth Powder can help so much to secure.

Again, besides polishing so brightly those teeth that show, this delightful dentifrice gives the thorough antiseptic cleansing to the crevices, which "dental hygiene requires. Being free from grit it cannot scratch or injure the enamel of the teeth.

To recount in a few lines what happened at the end of May this year :-There had been soute argument over industrial confi- tions in certain mills (a state of affaies. by no means eorditional to China alone, but which has been the ease in almost every country in the world, and apparent ly is unceasing), which bad led to the ar. rest of some students who had interfered. although not immediately concerned, Other students went in a body to Lonza Police station to demand the release of their comrades-a demand with which Lobviously the police could not comply. So far the facts are not seriously disput edi. Following the students's demonstri- tion, the crowd became so unruly, accord ing to the police, that. sestral police. men' were seriously assaulted, there was a fear that the Police Station woubt be rushed, and so the Inspector in charge ordered his men to fire, with the result that several people were killed on, injured, and su the trouble spreach It is held by schue that the police were wrong, to are unil that the matter could have been settled by more pacific means.

THE POLICE HELD IN.

Now, similarly to reevant in a few lines the events of '1903-For, several months the Chinese had heen agitating for full control of the Mixed Court (the story he ing very ably told by Mr. A M. Kotenes ip "Shanghai: Its Mixed Court and Coun eil," recently published by the North- China Daily News), and feeling ran very high. Jast as recently, inflammatory

So we have it that in 1905, under, pre- cisely similar" conditions, in exactly the same place, the police did not fire and the ultimate results were fat worse than in 1925 when the police fired to prevent their stalim being rushed In 100% after the event, the foreign Cand. Chinese opinon was that he police were wrong not to have fired in the beginning, anul in 1995 many Chinese and a few foreigners con- tend that the police were wrong to have fired in any vise. Surely a comparison

of events in the two years proves on which occasion the police did the right thing.
