News from a highly reliable source reached the Colony yesterday, which taken in conjunction with events here, lend considerable support to the growing belief that the end of the present labour deadlock is now a matter of days. The news alluded to comes from Canton, and is to the effect that despite the pressure--in many cases amounting to actual force which is being exerted by the Canton authorities to prevent strikers from returning to Hongkong, many hundreds of the latter con- trive daily to leave the Chinese city for some fe spot whence they eventually manage to get back to this Colony. The majority, it appears. have chosen the expedient of going to Macao, and later coming on to Hong- kong from there. Others though, of course, not so many have adopted the more risky plan of creeping past the frontier pickets under cover of darkness, sad getting into the New Territories. It would be interesting to ascertain in what proportion these latter ventures have met with

TRAM WORKERS.
It was learned yesterday that a large number of Chinese volunteers had come forward and offered their services to the Tramway Company. They are prepared to become drivers, conductors, and inspec- tors, and to sign contracts as permanent employees of the Company. Their ser- vices are being accepted and the servicce of the volunteers will be dispensed with as the new employees master their duties.
