GOVERNMENT GUARANTEE NO FURTHER ATTACKS PENDING NEGOTIATIONS, «

CONSUL-GENERAL'S REPLY TO GOVERNOR'S PROTEST.

The news from Canton yesterday was reassuring. As was expected. the Governor of the City, Wu Hon Man, has entered a protest against shooting of peaceable demonstrators, but the British Consul General was able to state, as an eye-witness, that the fring was started by the Chinese. His reply to the protest is published below and, as will be seen. it is emphatic and absolutely convincing. There have since been meetings between the European representatives and the Canton Govern- ment and as a result of the the Canton: Government has given a guarantee that no further attacks will be made against Shameon pend- ing the outcome of negotiations that are now proceeding.

The general impression appears to be that the Canton Government is divided into two cumps, One, supported by, the leading merchants, is striving for peaceful and orderly administration, whilst the other. under the influence of the Bolsheviks, is advocating a continuance of riot and disorder. “Everything now depends upon which side proves to be the stronger.

HESULT OF MECHANIOS' SECRET BALLOT.

The Dragon Festival which according to some people was to provide the crisis of the local strike, passed off very quietly yesterday, and no untoward events were reported in any part of the Colony. As regards" the progress of the strike, the position remained very much the same as on the previous day. While, it is true, a certain number of minor. Chinese workers employed in trade and industry joined the ranks of the idlers, it is uoteworthy that, several European households on the Island and in Kowloon were visited by chastened “boys" and amahs who had pre- viously evased work to go to Canton.
