WEMBLEY NOTES.

THE QUEEN AND HONGKONG.

The unofficial visit of the Qiawn on May 20th was a surprise to everybody, and Her Majesty, attended by Lady Ampthill, manifested her great interest by spending over six hours at Wembley and inspecting sight of the pavilions, including those of Halays and Hongkong

Preceding by ruilódok, thà Queen want to the Hongkong section and remained quite a long time. She was veeived by the Commissioners, Mr. Halbfax and Sir Robert Ho Tung. After a look at the Hongkong barbour from the Peak Her Majesty pro- ceeded to the mat-making section, and later watched. with much interest, the mäking of wax dolls, four of which she purchased. The Queen was shown a view of Hongkong by night, and the models of ships built at the works of the Hongkong and Whampoa Dock Company: Amongst Her Majesty's purchases were a cane chair, and ivory and silver pieces, the latter represent- ing a ricksha, a carrying chair, a lantern, etc., also some jade pendants Lady Ho Tung was presented, and Her Majesty evinced keen interest in this year's extended version of the silk process.

There is the charm of a distinctive at- mosphere about the crowded street of Hongkong, which makes the same little towain itself that it wur last year, The visitor who dined in the Hongkong- restaurant Inat year and gallantly waled through a mean of fifteen courses, begin- ning with birds'-nest soup "und ending up with shark-fins, will find it difficult ta 'believe that the bill of fare provided by the new caterer in charge this year contains an entirely new list of dishes. This, however... is the case. New furniture and new music make the restaurant an even more cheerful place than it was a year ago, and that is sying a great deal. "Outside in the street crowds of people are buying fans and lace, curios and furniture, and the attractive ginger that is so much in favour with the Western palate.

Mr. Hallifax, Commissioner of Hongkong, wishes it to be genemily known that the pavilion is now complete, and that the prices ut the Chinese restaurant, as well as of the various utilitärían exhibita, are much lower than last year-in fact, "mighty low!"

Mr. G. Duncan, of the Hongkong and Whampoa Deck Co.'s staff, one of the officials at the Hongkong section last year and this, is leaving for Hongkong on the 29th inst. His duties at the Exhibition have been taken over by Mr.. W. Greig, also of the Dock Co., who is home on leave. Mr. McKirdy, late of Hongkong. who has come boine for good, has been among recent visitors to the Hongkong · section.

Sir Robert Ho Tang is a representative. figure at the Exhibition. A typically go abead man of aflairs, Sir Robert, in ad- dition to his duties as honorary Commis- sioner at the Hongkong section, finds time to do a good deal of work in the City and elsewhere. With Lady Ho Tang be at- tenda many of the leading social functions. One of the papers describes him as one of the most picturesque figures in "London, clinging as he does to the Chinese style of dress, but he is most practically Western in his business methods, and, apart from Eis apparel, would pass for a typically go- ahead man of commerce. His carriage is as erect as that of a Guardsman.

WHITEAWAY'S

YEAR.

At the seventeenth annual meeting of Whiteaway, Laidlaw & Co., Ltd, the chairman (Mr. Mence Wilkinson), review- ing the year, said Trade in the Federat ed Malay States and Straits Settlements has not, up to now, benefited by the rubber restriction policy, but if the price of rubber has been permanently improved by curtailing the output, we are justified in expecting that our customers will soop have more money to spend. (Hear, hear.) As regards Siam, trade has been even more difficult to do than it was a year ago, and we hear of several of our competitors giving up business. Fortunately, the year which as just closed proved to be distinct-

Hope or Curiosity

I think sometimes the word " curiosity is just another name for " hope." You might fancy that it was curiosity that made you smoke your first Kensitas—no, sir, it was really hope, the hope that you would find Kensitas a really good cigarette, better than the kind you had been smoking.

But it is a fact, sir, that after you smoked that first Kensitas and experienced the cool, rare old blend of prime Virginia you continued to ama ke Kensimas, because you found that Kensims are. ...as good as really good cigarettes

can be,"

U.S. COMMERCE REPORTS. HONGKONG AS A MARKET FOR CHEMICALS.

Writing on the growth of Hongkong as a market for, cherniens," Lloyd A. Nolan, of the Chemical Division of the U.S. Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Com- merce, states that imports of chemical fertilisers into Hongkong advanced. from 2,903 tons in 1920, to 37,000 in 1923. The American share increased from 7 per cent. of the total sales in. 1990 to 41 per cent. in 1023. This expansion took place at the expense of Great Britain and "Japan, which formerly controlled the local market for fertilisers. Ginseng, the "itost widely used remedy in China for all kinds of ailments, is accorded almost superstitious reverence by the Chinese. It is imported in large quantities, and the total importa tion advanced from 690 piculs, worth £680,067, in 1922 to 1,000, valued at 783,736, in 1923. The consumption of
