SIR DOVETON STURDEE. SOME STORIES OF A GREAT, ADMIRAL
Admiral of the Fleet Sir Frederick Charles Doveton Sturdee who died at Wargrave House, Crawley Ridge, Cam- berley, last month, had a long and distin guished service career, but he will be. best known by the present generation as the hero of the Battle of the Falklandsor, the battle which avenged the Coronel disaster and which is regarded by some as the ctly decisive victory of the Great War.
It is as well to recall the fact that is was the day after the news of the disaster off Coronel was received that Lord Fisher, with that resourcefulness which was such a distinguishing trait in hint, issued orders that the battle-cruisers. Invincible and Inferille were to be detached from the feet and proceed forthwith to Devonport, dock sucre, have their hulls cleaned, take in six months' stores, and complete with coal. To Admiral Sturdee was en- trusted the task of secking out and des troying the enemy squadron that had wrought such haroc in the South Pacifie in the early days of November, 1914.
THE MAN AND HIS MISSION," The fitting-out of the Invincible and I'm-- Hesible was the first step towards the Julfilment of the vows of the crews of ships of the Grand Flect to avenge Coronel; hut the preparations were made with such profound wecrecy that the officer's und men were absolutely in the dark as to the mission upon which they were to embark. Vice-Admiral Sturdes, as he then was, had been serving at the Admiralty pntil November 8th, and it was on that day that he left London and pro- oceded to Davonport to hoist his Hag in the Invincible.
The story of the hustle and bustle which accompanied the equipping of the two battle-cruisers-unknown to the general public outside the Dockyard-is admir ably told by Com, the Hon. Harry Bing- ham, V.C., one of the officers who weat with Sturder, in his splendid little book, Falklands, Jutland, and the Bight." The work that had to be done at De- in three adya," he says. Was vonport
We stored and provisioned all colossal day and most of the night, and finally coaled from 3 um. on one afternoon until on the following day. A party of seven or eight public school direct entry midshipmen arrived in the nick of time to join in the proceedings.
ΠΟΡΣ
At the end of it one and all were completely exhausted. Officers and med, begrimed all over from top to toe, un- shaven, haggard, and weary, were stag gering about fike drunken flies. During our stay there was no question of leave and no chance of farewells to relations and friends."'
It was a few minutes after 4 p.m. on Nov. 10th that the vessels left Devon- port-course south: speed, 20 knots for 24 hours. When clear of home waters speed was reduced to 15 knots." "All that the officers of the two ships had been told was that they were going south and would therefore require tropical outfit, and that they might be away six months or more. It was not until the ships were at sen that the mystery was solved.

The weakness of our market during the first days of the fortnight under review determined some business with Japan. But when only a few thousand tons were bought, and whilst some dealers, were ex- peeting a further drop, prices advanced again, stopping all transactions.
