Owing to seasonal and other influences, the figures of overseas trade for any one month are apt to give a misleading im pression of the general position, and it j is therefore of interest to review the British. Trade returns for the first quar-
ter of 1995.

Ex- ports of British manufactures increased from £149.2 millions to £183.3 millions, the figure for the last quarter of 1994 being £137.8 millions. After allowance has been made for the separate treat- ment of trade with the Irish Free State. subsequent, to April 1st. 1923, statistics, prepared by the Board of Trade and bas- ed upon the pre-war level of prices, ahow that during the year ended March 31st, 1995, the volume of imports was about s per cent. greater, exports were: about 20 per cent, less, and re-experts about 13 per cent less than in 1913. It may, however, be mentioned that for the first quarter of 19h, exports of British manufactured * goods were, in volume, nearly 1 per cent greater than in the corresponding quarter of 1924, although, on the other hand, retained imports of raw materials increased during the same period by 37 per cent, and manufactured articles by 28 per cent. !

whole. the Review tinues, the Budget may be regarded as a successful attempt to distribute the tax concessions as evenly and as fairly as possible. Last year, most of the remissions were granted to indirect tax- payers, and these concessions are respon- sible for a further loss of revenue of £14 millions in the current year, as the con ccasions will now cover a full year.” It was, therefore, generally and, in the event, rightly anticipated that any re- lief in the current year's Budget would be devoted to the direct taxpayer, who now contributes approximately two-thirds of the tax revenue.
